Room Redux
Where Healing & Transformation go Hand in Hand
Welcome to Room Redux, where healing and transformation go hand in hand. We are compassionately dedicated to encouraging healing and improving the lives of children who have faced abuse, through room transformation. Often, abuse occurs in a child’s own room. This can link the room to feelings of fear and aversion, causing the child to avoid it entirely. We give children new rooms in which they can feel comfortable and safe!
Since the beginning, one main goal of Room Redux has been to have the ability to transform the rooms and lives of children everywhere who have been victimized. With Chapters opening up across America, we get closer to reaching that goal every day.
Statistics

Meet The Team
Karen “Ren” McCubbins
Executive Director
Ren has always had a passion for helping others, but the need for helping children truly sparked when her daughter was born 7 years ago. Children are truly our future and creating a safe space for them is extremely vital so becoming a part of the Room Redux organization was an easy decision for her to make. Outside of embarking on the new journey with Room Redux – Karen works in sales full-time, loves spending time with her daughter and her pug Stevie, is busy being involved in all of her daughter’s MANY activities, enjoys being active through powerlifting, and continues to strive everyday to be her best self. Karen is looking forward to the years to come with Room Redux and can’t wait to start transforming the lives of those who need us the most – the children!
James Popejoy
James is the proud father of 3 girls and and has been married to his beautiful wife for 20 years. Being from a small town outside of St. Louis, he is accustomed to being involved in various civic organizations and activities, especially those serving the youth in the area. He also has experience setting up and running a not-for-profit corporation.
James received his Bachelor of Science in Finance from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 2001, and his Master’s of Business Administration from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2021. When James heard of Room Redux and the mission it served, he fell in love with this unique way of helping abused children find a path towards healing. He could think of no better way to put his business experience and networking skills to a more worthy use.
In addition to his business experience, James has a construction background as well. He firmly believes that everything happens for a reason, even if we don’t always understand what that reason is. It can be no coincidence that he has the means to meet so many needs of Room Redux St. Louis, and he was excited to be invited to help the organization increase their impact in the St Louis community.

Testimonials
First of all, let me say: Susie, her volunteers, and Room Redux are angels in human form. They breathed life not only into my daughter’s room, but also back into her soul. She has been in a very dark place for so long. She hasn’t slept well in years, until the first night in her new room. It smelled so good, was inspiring, and the blue and ocean theme above her bed was so very calming to her. She slept well and has most nights since then. The moment she walked into her room, her eyes lit up like I haven’t seen in quite a while. She smiled big and was awed for hours while she walked around and took everything in. Room Redux tailored her room to her - I can’t describe all they did, but unique touches designed to minister to my 16-year old was beyond belief. Susie didn’t just listen, she researched and studied what was best and her resources are endless. Thank you to Susie, her very special volunteers, and Room Redux. Every city in the nation should be so lucky to have Room Redux in their neighborhood.
Mother of a 16-year old girlI wanted to walk you through my experience with Room Redux. They truly are an amazing organization! At first when I was approached by my daughter’s counselor about the opportunity, I will admit that I had felt a little emotional about it. It made me feel bad because I thought people figured I couldn’t take care of my kid well enough, but if you feel like this just know this is not at all what anyone thinks! I learned this from going through this experience. I agreed to let Room Redux come and take a look at my daughter (and her two siblings) room. When Susie came and I saw her face and all the excitement and planning spinning in her brain you can clearly see that this group truly just wants to help to make your little guy or girl feel special! All of the volunteers that came were super sweet and did an amazing job. Now when she came and looked at the room I had no idea what could be done because it’s three kids in one room - that’s just how it has to be sometimes - but oh my gosh I could not believe the transformation and all of the intricate and thoughtful details. These little thoughtful details are what made all of my kids feel so loved! This to me is what really shows the lasting impression on what this group has done. For days after the room was complete we were still finding and noticing new things that they did. It was like a puzzle of love. My daughter loved everything so much it was nice to see a smile on her face again. She could not be happier with her new comfy space! Thank you and all of your volunteers for giving your time, hearts, and energy! You made a difference in our lives.
Mother of a 16-year old girl, 9-year old boy, and 8-year old girlThe blessing from my daughter’s new room really made an impact in our spirit - we decorated this year! Family has been coming today to see her beautiful room transformation! It has been years since we decorated for Christmas. She would sleep with me. Friday was the first day she slept all night in her room in years. You made a difference in her life! And I am truly grateful that our good Lord blessed us with Room Redux! Thank you so much!
Mother of a 15-year old girlOn December 10, 2018, Room Redux came and did my son’s bedroom. I cried when I saw the room because it made a huge impact on my son’s self esteem and it could not have come at a better time than at Christmas. When he got home from school and saw his room, he was so happy that people who didn’t know him loved and cared for him enough to give him such a wonderful gift. For a few months, he has been kinda down, so for him to have his room redone was a gigantic blessing from God working through organizations like Room Redux. I can’t thank Room Redux enough and all of the people associated with it. Not only did they make my son’s day, they made my day. They went above and beyond what I expected. Thanks for all of what y’all do to bring happiness to every child’s face and life. I can’t thank you enough for what y’all have given my son.
L.H, Mother of a 17-year old boyOne of the horrors of the world that I just cannot wrap my head around is that there are children in this world who are victims of sexual abuse. It makes me physically ill that innocent children are victimized. Every person needs a safe place to heal. For many people, they retreat to their bedrooms to curl up, cry, sleep, relax, and process. Imagine a child whose bedroom was the place of horrific abuse. How can that child begin to heal? Room Redux surprises a child by doing a room makeover so they, as opposed to reliving the horror every time they enter their room, may enter a room that has been redesigned with their tastes and interests. They change the narrative so their bedroom is a place of joy and safety. I know your Facebook feed is full of people asking for donations to many worthy causes. I ask that you consider donating to Room Redux. I have been witness to the hard work and dedication of so many volunteers who not only spend the day doing a remodel - they spend weeks and months planning, building, painting, shopping, and coordinating. And to see the pure joy on a child’s face when they know that this is now their safe space overwhelms me with emotion every. single. time.
Nicole B. donor and volunteerThe importance of room transformation in the therapeutic healing process is a key aspect that I feel has not been utilized as much as it should. As therapists, there is only so much we can do within our office for 50 minutes a week. Yes, a client can process their trauma and develop coping skills, but that same child may be going back home every day and night to their room where the abuse has usually occurred. They possibly may be reliving their abusive experience or continuing to exhibit post traumatic symptoms due to the fact that their bedroom is a constant reminder or trigger of the abuse. Room transformations with Room Redux offer children a fresh start.
McKenzie W. therapist.Room Redux is right on track in helping children heal from the trauma of abuse. What a practical way to make a difference in a child's life! A new room, a new view, a new perspective! Brilliant! You are showing that these children are valued and cared for by giving them a beautiful new sanctuary in which to heal. Thank you for your work in promoting the healing process!
Tina A. MA, LPCWhat a beautiful process. I am privileged to have been able to be a volunteer at several remodeling projects with Room Redux, and it is truly inspiring to see a group of people who truly care about children working together to help someone they've never met and, likely, never will meet. One of my favorite parts of the process is Room Redux's insistence on remaining as anonymous as possible: when the focus is pulled away from the individual, there's much more room for cooperation and focus on what really matters. I would be honored to take part in more room transformations with Room Redux - and I hope to see you there!
Gabriel V. volunteerOMG. We love the rooms know we don't want to get out. When we save money My husband and I want to hire you to decorate our living room. How much would you charge us. Where did you buy the hangers. I love them. So if I buy stuff to decorate you all would help me. I had open house yesterday at night everyone love the way you decorate the rooms. They said thank you for helping us out. C----- now has us as his parents and a new room with even his own bed. His life will be so good now. A---- keeps saying oh my God oh my God. She loves her walls and art and all of it. Thank everyone who did this posable please. Thank you we love it.
Murtle mom of 12 yo girl & aunt/mom of 8 mo boyOur niece has really enjoyed the outstanding work that your team put into transforming her room into a little girl's paradise. She makes sure that each day when she makes her bed that the stuffed animals are placed back just as she first found them on the day that she first saw them! She enjoys sitting at her "makeup stand" and brushing her hair and playing with her imaginary friends while looking in the mirror. She has adjusted the lights to do different things - but always wants help to get them back to a stationary lighting...LOL! Thank you for all of the hard work and the caring hearts of your team. [She] lived several days in her bean bag - and continues to love the changes that you provided in her room!
Guardians of a 5-year old girlI cannot begin to thank your team for transforming my daughters room. Our family is both humbled and extremely grateful. She previously would not sleep in her room even with the help of her therapist yet now she loves her room & even goes to bed earlier! She spends the majority of her time in her room whether shes watching tv or drawing at her vanity. It has made such a positive impact on her mood and behavior. Room Redux truly put so much thought and love into each detail of her bedroom which is absolutely fabulous. We did share with our daughter that this transformation was done by Room Redux and what your program does for children. She shared that she felt so special and loved that strangers would do something like this for her. She has also asked to pay this kindness forward by helping with future transformations. Thank you Room Redux for being the difference in my daughters life and giving her back some of the joy this traumatic experience has taken from her. -Mari H.
Mother of a 12 yo girlHer reaction was shock, happiness, and disbelief. My entire family spent the next couple of hours in there together that night. She is so happy and actually is fixing her bed! She says she wants it to stay the way it is. Her pug, her lifeline, is loving his bed and uses the steps to sneak up at night. Thank you for all the hidden treasures. You truly are an artistic angel! I love y'all if you ever need anything let me know.

Children who are in counseling or who have been through counseling are getting that crucial piece of the healing puzzle but very often they are going back to a room where abuse occurred or there are triggers in the room. Even if the abuse happened somewhere else they deserve to know that there are people who care about them who don’t know them and expect NOTHING from them. Donate
Room Redux operates through grants and donations from you. Your gift helps transform the rooms of children who may otherwise not have a way to change their environment. We spend on average $2,500 per Room Transformation depending on the scope of the project and how many children are in each room.
Each room transformation is tailored to the children’s taste and interests and always includes a new mattress and bed, new flooring if needed, paint, a t.v. or laptop if needed, and decor. We want to transform the bedroom into a refuge for the child. A room that they love and a room that they aren’t expected to give something in return for.
